On November 19, 2021, Health Canada approved a vaccine against COVID-19 for children aged 5 to 11 years and authorized its marketing. Having a scientific background, I asked myself the following question: what are the possible side effects of this vaccine in the short, medium and long term?

Dr. Byram Briddle1, Associate Professor of Viral Immunology and a researcher in the development of new vaccines at the University of Guelph in Ontario, states:

"For traditional vaccines, when you inject them into the shoulder, the technology tells us that these vaccines stay in place in the shoulder, and then cells in the immune system become activated... But we found that this does not apply to this new vaccine technology (messenger RNA). What we found, in fact, is that only about 25% of the dose stays in the shoulder... What we know for sure and is not speculation is that the vaccine is spread throughout the body..."

Could having the vaccine spread throughout the body bring about medium to long-term side effects? Could it affect the growth and development of the child?

In the document2 that the pharmaceutical company Pfizer recently submitted to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the United States to obtain its approval, it is stated:

"The number of participants in our study was too small to detect potential risks of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) associated with the vaccine... Current data tend to show that 16-19 year olds are more affected that 12-15 year olds, thus reasonably suggesting that the risk will be even lower in 5-11 year olds."

In other words, the risk of myocarditis following the vaccine injection was not clearly established given the insufficient number of participants in the study. The pharmaceutical company has therefore formulated a hypothesis and the vaccination campaign that is beginning will serve as an experimental laboratory to confirm or disprove this same hypothesis.

The current situation puts the physician in a very uncomfortable position. To the parents who ask me if this vaccine will have an impact on their children in the months and years to come, I am sorry, but I don't know what to say, except that no study exists in this sense.

Since the risks of vaccination have not been fully assessed, why not take a step back to better ensure the safety of the product?
